KIXE History

1952 - First educational television station, KUHT, goes on air.

1954 - KIXE incorporation papers signed

1961 - TV "Vast Wasteland" speech by FCC Chairman Newton Minnow

1964 - KIXE signs on air with black and white programs only

1967 - Public Television Act signed by President Johnson

1967 - Channel 9 moved from Chico to Redding

1969 - Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) begins in US

1971 - KIXE begins broadcasting network, color programs

1974 - KIXE begins to originate color programs

1981 - KIXE broadcasts programs with Closed Captions

1987 - KIXE moves from Industrial Way to North Market Street

1990 - KIXE airs Ken Burns’ The Civil War

1995 - KIXE installs new transmitter

1996 - KIXE broadcasts programs in stereo

1997 - KIXE broadcasts programs with Descriptive Video

2003 - KIXE installs a new digital transmitter and broadcasts programs in digital,

2008- KIXE terminates analog broadcast and transmits in digital ONLY, on VHF channel 9

2009 - KIXE begins airing the Create Channel on channel 9.2

2010 - KIXE begins airing The World Channel on channel 9.3

2011 - KIXE airs season one of Downton Abbey

2013 - KIXE airs season one of locally produced series , The Forum.

2014 - KIXE airs season one of the Big Education Event (The Bee)

2016 - KIXE begins airing First Nation Experience (FNX) on channel 9.3

2017 - KIXE airs the local quarterly call-in program Northstate Issues Live

2019 – KIXE transitions to a full HD studio

2020 - KIXE streams channel 9.1 over the internet.
